Janet Hu, who set the 15-16 year old national age group record in the women’s 50-yard freestyle on Thursday, earned her second NAG record of the meet in the 100-yard butterfly on Friday night. She finished fourth overall in a time of 52.40 seconds to lower the previous mark by .03 seconds.
It has been a hugely successful meet for the 16-year-old Nation’s Capital Swim Club swimmer who also finished seventh in the 100 backstroke in a time of 52.42, her third ‘A’ final. Hu will swim the 100 free on Saturday.
Hu’s teammate Andrew Seliskar, 16, also made waves on Friday, setting his first NAG record in the 100 breaststroke during the morning prelims. His time of 54.11 eclipses the previous 15-16 year old mark by .27 seconds. He finished 7th in the ‘B’ final for 15th overall. He may have gone even quicker, but Seliskar — an outstanding all-around swimmer — also competed in the grueling 400 IM earlier that session. He finished 5th in the ‘A’ final in 3:46.13 — four seconds off the NAG record held by another great all-around swimmer, Michael Phelps.
Hu and Seliskar both train under John Flanagan at the Tyson’s training site. Flanagan has been involved with producing a number of elite level swimmers over the years including 2012 Olympian Matt McLean.
Arizona senior Ellyn Baumgardner (NCAP/Fairfax High School) also had a great night, finishing second in the 100 breaststroke in 58.86. Along with McLean, Baumgardner was named to the national team this year who will compete in the short course world championships in Istanbul, Dec. 12-16.
Katie Ledecky finished fourth in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:44.56 a day after standing atop the podium as the national champion in the 500 free. She will have another shot at a national time on Saturday in the 1,650 freestyle where she is the top seed. Second seed Haley Anderson, the 2012 Olympic open water silver medalist, will challenge for first place.
